BITE (Barbican International Theatre Events)
Organisation: The Barbican Centre
Role: Artistic Director
Launched in 1998 alongside Inventing America, the BITE was designed to replace the Royal Shakespeare Company’s residency with international productions of opera, theatre, dance and multi-media work. It substantially enhanced London’s exposure to international work and enabled many productions to be seen uniquely in the capital.
Since its inception, BITE has commissioned or co-produced more than 50 productions, enabling the creation of new work which might otherwise not have been given a lifeline. Latterly the Barbican has offered a London home to both Cheek by Jowl and the Michael Clark Dance Company.
